Sydney Uni Women’s AFL Club expands to field two teams in 2017

Sydney Uni Women’s AFL club is officially expanding in 2017, fielding both a Premier Division and Division 1 team.

With the success IMG_0966of the AFLW comes an increasing number of women and girls wanting to play AFL, from elite athletes looking for a sport which offers them a serious professional pathway all the way to teenagers wanting to give AFL a try for the first time after seeing it on TV.

The Premier Division team will focus on producing the highest level athletes for the AFL Women’s competition, with the goals of getting players drafted into the AFLW and ensuring Sydney Uni Bombers remain at the top of the ladder in the regular season.

The Division 1 team will be a feeder team to the Premier Division, allowing younger and less experienced players to improve their skills and get ample game time before playing premier division. This team will also cater to those players who want to enjoy the social aspects of footy, fitness and the team environment.

Sydney Uni Women’s President, Olivia Warren, is excited about the development. “It’s always a bit scary making a big change to the club, but I believe with the AFLW starting up this is the best time to do it. We’ve had great numbers to training and we only just started pre-season so the whole team is really excited about what’s ahead. We all want as many girls and women involved in AFL as possible”.
